Accessibility statement for Compare school and college performance in England

This service is part of the wider GOV.UK website. There's a separate accessibility statement for the main GOV.UK website.

This accessibility statement applies to Compare school and college performance in England service, available at https://www.compare-school-performance.service.gov.uk/

This website is run by the Department for Education. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you will be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS and VoiceOver, Dragon Naturally Speaking and Fusion)

Testing was carried out using the following software:

  • Dragon NaturallySpeaking (V15.71), a voice recognition (speech to text) program which requires minimal user interface from a mouse or keyboard.
  • JAWS (2023), a screen reader (text to speech) program developed for users whose vision loss prevents them from seeing screen content or navigating with a mouse.
  • Zoomtext (2023), a magnification and reading program tailored for low-vision users. It enlarges and enhances everything on screen, echoes typing and essential program activity, and reads screen content.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website aren’t fully accessible:

  • When changing colours and contrast icons can be lost and charts can be difficult to read depending on the users choice.
  • The comparison tables don't work well when zoomed in.
  • Maps can be difficult to navigate via keyboards and screen readers

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

The Department for Education is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance Status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non Accessible Content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non Compliance with the accessibility regulations

Navigation and accessing information

The radio buttons needed to filter results, are not accessible using standard voice commands so the MouseGrid feature needs to be used. The MouseGrid divides the screen into 9 numbered parts and the user dictates a grid number so that focus is given to that particular area of the screen. Whilst this is not a compliance failure, it does make the system difficult to use for someone who relies on voice input.

Zoomtext

When the page is magnified at a greater degree than 100%, the information on the page is rendered as such that there is no horizontal scroll bar.

Interactive tools and transactions

The website provides users with a list of links that are on the Web page. Link text aids users who want to choose from this list of links. It is best practice for links with different purposes and destinations to have different link text. On multiple pages, there are 3 links labelled “View” that go to different destinations. This contravenes WCAG 2.1 AA success criteria 4.1.2

When listing links, there are a number of -opens a popup that appear in the Links List dialogue box. These all display popup dialogue boxes with different messages.

Disproportionate Burden
