The Research Room at IWM London can be used to access the IWM library's eResource offer. We provide free reference access to a range of scholarly journals, digitised newspapers and serials, reference databases, and digitised archival collections via our computers.
These resources can only be accessed on site during a Research Room appointment and we are limited to five users per day. When booking your Research Room appointment, specify that you would like to access eResources in the additional information section of the booking form. - Australian Journal Of International Affairs . Vol 59, issue 1 – Vol.59 issue 4 (2005)
- British Journal For Military History (all issues): The BJMH is a pioneering Open Access, peer-reviewed journal that brings high quality scholarship in military history to an audience beyond academia.
- British Newspaper Archive: The largest online collection of British and Irish historical newspapers. The British Newspaper archive is created in collaboration with the British Library.
- Canadian Military History Journal (all issues): CMH is a peer-reviewed academic journal published bi-annually by the Laurier Centre for the Study of Canada with editorial and financial support from the Canadian War Museum.
- Cryptologia. Vol.29, issue 1 (2004) – Vol. 15, issue 4 (2006) A scholarly journal dealing with all aspects of cryptology such as the history, technology and effects of communications intelligence.
- First World War Studies (all issues): The journal of the International Society for First World War Studies.
- Illustrated London News, 1842-2003: This digital resource is fully searchable, and provides users with access to the entire run of the world’s first fully illustrated weekly newspaper.
- The Journal Of Imperial And Commonwealth History. Vol.33, issue 1 (2005) – Vol.39, issue 5 (2011): Peer reviewed articles presenting and discussing research in the history of the British Empire and Commonwealth and in comparative colonial experiences.
- Journal Of Slavic Military Studies. Vol 19, issue 1 (2006) – Vol. 23, issue 4 (2010): A journal which navigates all aspects of military affairs in the Slavic nations of central and eastern Europe in historical and geopolitical context.
- Journal Of Strategic Studies. Vol. 28, issue 1 (2005) – Vol. 33, issue 6 (2010): An academic journal with a multi-disciplinary approach to military and diplomatic strategic studies.
- JSTOR: Includes archives of over one thousand leading academic journals across the humanities, social sciences, and sciences, as well as select monographs and other materials valuable for academic work.
- Medicine, Conflict And Survival. Vol.21, issue 1 (2005) – Vol. 31, issue 3-4 (2015)
- Military Balance. Vol. 105 (2005) - Vol.115 (2015): The annual journal of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, which assesses military capabilities and defence economics worldwide.
- RUSI Journal. Vol. 142, issue 1 (1997) - present: The journal for the Royal United Services Institute, a defence and security think tank. This publication contains writings on national and international defence and security issues.
- Service Newspapers Of World War Two: This digital resource holds over 300 titles from key nations across the globe that took part in the Second World War.
- Small Wars & Insurgencies. Vol.8, issue 1 (1997)- present: This international and interdisciplinary journal contains papers concerned with insurgencies and guerrilla conflicts past and present, counter insurgencies including national doctrines, terrorist movements and ideologies, irregular warfare and the debates on its historiography, as well as peackeeping and humanitarian practices.
- Strategic Survey. Vol 104 (2004)- Vol 122 (2022, ceased publication): The Strategic Survey journal is an annual review of world affairs from the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
- Times Digital Archive 1785-2014: The Times Digital Archive is an online, full-text facsimile of more than 200 years of The Times (London). Researchers can search using keywords and hit-term highlighting. The entire newspaper is captured, with all articles, advertisements and illustrations/photos divided into categories to facilitate searching.
- Trench Journals and Unit Magazines Of The First World War: A database containing a vast collection of rare magazines by and for servicemen and women of all nations during the First World War. Many of the digitised journals are from our own library collection.
- UKPressOnline: A database that holds a selection of newspapers including Second World War newspapers Action, Blackshirt and Fascist Week. All are searchable by name, date, phrase and word.
- Whitehall Papers Vol.40, (1997) - present: In-depth studies of specific developments, issues or themes in the field of national and international defence and security.
Databases
- Ancestry Ancestry is useful for tracing family history as you can access digitised service records, pension records, prisoner rolls and histories.
- First World War - The Adam Matthew digital database provides primary sources for the study of the Great War brought together in four thematic modules: Personal Experiences, Propaganda and Recruitment, Visual Perspectives and Narratives and A Global Conflict.
- Oxford Dictionary Of National Biography: Biographies of significant, influential or notorious figures in British history.
- Who's Who & Who Was Who: A leading source of up-to-date autobiographical information on over 32,000 influential people worldwide who have had an impact on British life. Who Was Who is an historical archive going back to 1897 which includes people, now deceased, who were included in previous editions of Who's Who. The database is searchable by occupation, and has a large section on those who served with the Armed forces and intelligence services.
- Women, War and Society, 1914-1918: Created from the published material in IWM's Women’s Work Collection, these unique documents – charity and international relief reports, pamphlets, photographs, letters and press cuttings – are published in fully searchable form, along with essays from leading scholars. These documents form an indispensable resource for the study of 20th Century social, political, military and gender history.

Between Tuesday - Friday we provide access to original documents, sound recordings, photographs, IWM's administrative archive records, library material and eResources.
Appointments are essential and must be made at least seven days in advance of your planned visit so that material can be made available.
