How can we help?

Our Membership FAQs cover the most common questions about our membership scheme

You can join IWM membership in branch, over the phone or online.

Visit our volunteer pages to find out about our volunteer offer and to search and apply for opportunities that match your availability and interests.

We cannot answer general historical questions, or provide you with information about your family history.

Review our family history research guides to help start your research.

Book an appointment in our research room to view material from IWM's collections.

Appointments are essential and must be made at least seven days in advance of your planned visit.

Search our collections online

Tips:

  • Make sure all search terms are spelt correctly.
  • Use filters and quotation marks to narrow your search results.
  • Remove filters and use less specific terms to broaden your search.
  • Keywords that relate to the subject you are searching for generally return more results.

‘No media available online’ means that the item has not yet been digitised, or is not available online for copyright reasons.  You can request digitisation on demand at additional cost from our Image and Film and Licencing team.

The best way to learn more about individual items in our collections is to book an appointment in our research room. For many objects such as individual photographs, documents and diaries, our online records reflect all the information we have.

To license IWM's image, sound or film collections for commercial use contact our Image and Film and Licencing team.

IWM welcomes gifts of historic material. New objects accepted into IWM's care must significantly enhance our collections by providing insight into the human experience of war, and its impact on people’s lives.

We receive many offers of donations, and cannot individually reply to them all.

Read our guidance on offering material to IWM before contacting us

If you do not hear from us within a month of contact, please assume that your offer has been rejected.

Many of our spaces are available to hire for a corporate event or private party.

Anyone wishing to get in touch with IWM regarding legal matters can email [email protected].

Communications or queries related to legal matters should be addressed to the Governance and Resources office, c/o Françoise Harris.
