Chris Deal was awarded his PhD in 2015. A partnership with King's College London, Chris’ thesis examined the international radio broadcasts of the Soviet Union to investigate how it went about framing the invasion of Afghanistan in December 1979, and the subsequent 1980 Moscow Olympic boycott campaign.

Using transcripts of broadcasts made by Radio Moscow and Radio Peace & Progress, his research sheds new light on international radio broadcasting during the Cold War, Soviet attempts to justify the invasion of Afghanistan and the Moscow Olympic boycott campaign, the relationship between sport and politics, and the wider international situation in 1980.
