Lizzie Oliver was awarded her doctorate in 2014. A partnership with the University of Leeds, her research project explored the rarely-documented story of the second ‘Death Railway’ constructed by Far East Prisoners of War (FEPOW) during the Second World War on the island of Sumatra between May 1944 and August 1945. It sought to bring to light both the personal testimonies of FEPOW based on diaries, letters and sound recordings held within IWM archives, and the ‘post-memories’ of family members still researching and coming to terms with the wartime experiences of their loved ones.
