Pond Soundscapes

Pond Soundscapes

February 5, 2026

Brighton-based Sound Artist Simon James used special equipment to record the curious sounds from beneath the surface of a newly restored Dew Pond on Truleigh Hill, in East Sussex.

There is still much that is unknown about the sounds heard on underwater recordings. From the short soundscape below, can you make out regular, rhythmic pops and bubbles? Those are plants going through the process of photosynthesis! The growls and squeaks could be different species of aquatic wildlife, such as water boatmen, rubbing parts of their bodies together.
