Non-indigenous species introduction records in UK waters 2003 to 2020

Description

Data are the years and locations of first occurrence of marine non-indigenous species (NIS) in UK waters in the two OSPAR regions (Greater North Sea, Celtic Seas), of species that have arrived in the assessment period 2003-2020 inclusive. These data are subject to analysis under the UK Marine Strategy Indicator Assessment 2024 'the number of new non-indigenous species introductions'.

NIS occurrence records for new species during the time period 2003-2020 inclusive were sought from experts within the Devolved Administrations, and additionally from NBN Atlas and peer-reviewed papers (please see data for more information). These data were collated to determine the date of first occurrence for each species in the UK waters of each OSPAR region (Greater North Sea, Celtic Seas). The taxonomic range of species considered covers metazoans, plants and algae. Only species widely considered to be NIS were included (i.e. cryptogenic species, those for which non-native status is unclear, were excluded). First occurrence records within transitional waters were included for those species that were judged to be predominantly marine.
