Check on UK and Welsh government action

The Human Rights Tracker

The UK has agreed to follow seven of the nine core United Nations (UN) human rights treaties. The UN makes recommendations for how the UK and Welsh governments can improve their implementation of these treaties. Our Human Rights Tracker gives an overview of action taken by the UK and Welsh governments to carry out these recommendations. We have assessed government action across the following areas: systems for promoting human rights, education, health, justice, liberty and personal security, living standards, participation and work.

Each area is split into human rights topics, which contain assessments of government action against specific UN recommendations. These have replaced the progress assessments previously available on the Human Rights Tracker. You can read all UN treaty body recommendations made to the UK on the tracker, and find out how to monitor human rights.

We have given each topic an ‘Overall status’ based on the most common status for the assessments in that topic. Some areas are reserved to the UK government. This means that the UK Parliament makes the decisions in these areas. The Welsh government has also taken some action in these areas. We have provided information on the Welsh Government's actions in these areas, but we have not assessed them.

To learn how we make our assessments and what each action status means, read our methodology. For a fuller view of UK compliance with international human rights obligations, read our reports on monitoring and promoting UN treaties.

We hope this tool informs research, debate and decision-making, to drive meaningful change and enhance human rights for everyone. To help us understand how we can improve this tool, fill in our survey.
