NJR Annual Report 2025

Our 22nd Annual Report was launched in the NJR Session at this year’s BOA Congress 2025 in Liverpool, with full analysis of the hip, knee, shoulder, elbow and ankle joints – with each joint individual section report available online too, as the style of having these individual reports proved popular last year and so we have produced them again.
Our report is the formal public report of the registry for the period of 1st April 2024 to 31st March 2025 and all of the above reports can be found on our dedicated Annual Report website. We hope you will visit the website to also read about the progress of our various committees and about the new service developments that the NJR has been planning and delivering, as well as to view interactive clinical activity information.
It is essential that as much good quality data as possible is captured to continue to improve clinical outcomes and patient safety. Having collected data since April 2003, with the purpose of improving patient outcomes following surgery, the registry has now recorded over 4.5 million procedures.
A total of 263,865 joint procedures were submitted onto the registry during the calendar year 2024, which were made available for outcome analyses in the report.
These were:
- Hip procedures: 116,901
- Knee procedures: 134,652
- Shoulder procedures: 9,809
- Ankle procedures: 1,347
- Elbow procedures: 1,056
As a result of the increasing volume and quality of data, it is possible to make more accurate analysis available to all stakeholders. Average gender, age, health of patient and the most common indication for surgery: data are presented in the NJR’s summary of key facts about joint replacement, which can be found on the link to the Annual Report below, within in the downloads menu section.
The report shows a continued reduction in joint revision surgery, evidence that implants are lasting longer, and that outcomes for patients have improved year-on-year. The NJR’s interactive reporting platform makes this information even more accessible, providing clinicians and hospital staff with real-time data, as well as statistical analysis to support evidence-based best practice.
Beyond monitoring outcomes, the NJR actively enables innovation through research. Fellowship programmes supported by the NJR and academic partners are tackling key questions ranging from the impact of mental health on knee replacement outcomes through to the longevity of elbow and shoulder implants. This year’s report also documents four recent research topics in summary paper form.
Patients can look up their proposed consultant surgeon and hospital on the NJR’s Surgeon and Hospital Profile, where the last three years of activity is available. If considering a hip or knee replacement, they can use the NJR’s Patient Decision Support Tool.
Described by Professor Sir Stephen Powis, then National Medical Director of NHS England, as “the jewel in the crown of patient safety initiatives”, and by Baroness Cumberlege in her report as a ‘global exemplar of an implantable medical device registry,’ the NJR continues to be both a safeguard and a springboard, protecting patients today and shaping the orthopaedic care of tomorrow.
