Professor Phil Baker, Chair of Health Innovation East Midlands

Professor Phil Baker is the Independent Chair of Health Innovation East Midlands, joining the organisation in April 2024. 

Starting his career within the NHS as an obstetrician, Phil has extensive experience in research and academia, having worked within the UK and internationally including posts in North America, Asia and Australasia. 

Alongside his role with HIEM, Phil is Pro-Vice Chancellor of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of East Anglia (having served as PVC of Life Sciences and Dean of Medicine and then PVC for Research and Enterprise at the University of Leicester over 10 years).  Phil is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and has published 450 peer-reviewed research articles.

Tim Guyler, Vice-Chair

Tim has worked in acute hospital management for over 20 years. A graduate of the NHS Management Training Scheme in 1999, he worked in Hertfordshire and Hull and East Yorkshire before joining Nottingham University Hospitals Trust (NUH), undertaking roles as General Manager, Head of Financial Turnaround, Deputy Director of Operations, Programme Director for Better for You and Chief Operating Officer.

Tim is currently Director of Integration and Assistant Chief Executive at NUH- providing leadership for the Trust on Partnerships and Integration across NUH, the local health and social care system, and the wider East Midlands Network.

Nick has been an independent healthcare consultant for the last ten years advising NHS organisations on service redesign, risk management, governance, and cost improvement.

He worked for the Audit Commission for 20 years, leading major reviews of assistive technology, community equipment services, medicines management and patient flow. Nick is currently a non-executive director at Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust where he is Deputy Chair and Chair of the Audit Committee and Organ Donation Committee.

Dr Glenn Crocker, Independent Director

Dr Glenn Crocker, Independent Director

Glenn has wide experience of the commercial health and life science sector and has worked in the US and UK in a range of roles, including his current position as Executive Director of Pioneer Group Ltd.

He originally qualified as a chartered accountant, starting his career with Ernst and Young. He worked for almost 20 years with BioCity Nottingham Group Ltd. Prior to his role with the Pioneer Group Ltd, and is also a director with the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership.

Glenn was awarded the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in 2014 in recognition of his contribution to the biotechnology industry, and received the Nottingham Award in 2013 for services to the city.
