Our role in delivering the 10 Year Health Plan for England
The UK government's 10 Year Health Plan endorses NICE’s core purpose which is to help practitioners and commissioners get the best care to people, fast, while ensuring value for the taxpayer. It sets out 3 bold ambitions for us to deliver over the coming years. These are:
- faster, fairer rollout of high-impact healthtech
- keeping guidance up to date to drive smarter spending
- parallel decisions for faster medicines access.

New best practice principles for generative AI in health economic modelling
Our Health Technology Assessment Innovation Laboratory (HTA Lab) has published findings from a pioneering project examining how generative AI could transform health economic evaluation, a resource-intensive component of health technology assessment.
The project addressed concerns about quality and consistency in AI-generated economic models by developing a set of best practice principles. We’ll incorporate these into our position statement on AI in evidence generation and they may inform future updates to our methods.
This ground-breaking research supports international efforts to harmonise generative AI standards in health economics and health technology assessment.

Making economic evaluations more consistent across care pathways
We’re working to bring our guidance together by topic, so that it’s all in one place, clearer to understand and easier to use. To support this important work, we need a consistent approach to economic evaluation across care pathways.
We’ve now published a position statement on using disease-specific reference models and disease-specific reference case extensions in economic evaluations. This statement sets out our approach to developing disease-specific reference case extensions and explains how we'll select topics for future extensions. We've also published the scope for our first disease-specific reference case extension, which focuses on the management of overweight and obesity.
This represents a significant step forward in making our economic evaluation methods more coherent and useful across related pieces of guidance.

NICE chief executive to step down at the end of 2025
After 4 years of transformational leadership, our chief executive Dr Sam Roberts will step down at the end of the year to support her children through a difficult time.
