Mental Health, Wellbeing and Dementia

Please note: The Fingertips mental health profiles have been combined and streamlined. This includes the 'common mental health disorders', 'severe mental illness', 'co-occurring substance misuse and mental health issues' 'perinatal mental health', and the 'children and young people's mental health and wellbeing' profiles. The new and combined profiles largely incorporate the content of the original profiles and are found below under 'Adult mental health and wellbeing' and 'Perinatal, children and young people's mental health' profiles. The suicide prevention profile remains unchanged.

  • Adult mental health and wellbeing | Fingertips - (OHID) This profile combines the ‘Common mental disorders’, ‘Severe mental illness’ and 'Co-occurring substance misuse and mental health issues' profiles which have been discontinued. It also includes the ‘Wellbeing' topic from the removed ‘Mental health and wellbeing JSNA’ profile. The profile contains data on key indicators, identification of need, factors affecting mental health, wellbeing, services and access, and quality and outcomes.
  • Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey: Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing, England, 2023/4 - (NHSE) The Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey (APMS) series provides data on the prevalence of both treated and untreated psychiatric disorder in the English adult population (aged 16 and over)
  • Children living with parents in emotional distress - (OHID) Official statistics report on the proportion of children living with at least one parent reporting symptoms of emotional distress, by family type and work status
  • Child mental ill health and absence from school, England: 2021 to 2022 - (ONS) Analysis of the relationship between child mental ill health and school absence

  • Dementia Profile - (OHID) Fingertips profile focusing on prevalence of dementia, prevention, diagnosis, living and supporting well and death in people with dementia
  • Dementia surveillance factsheets - (OHID) These interactive factsheets show the disparities that exist across England in relation to the diagnosis of people with dementia and the care they receive
  • Estimating suicide among higher education students, England and Wales: August 2016 to July 2023 - (ONS) Estimates of suicides among higher education students by sex, age and ethnicity between the academic year ending 2017 and the academic year ending 2023. Based on mortality records linked to Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) student records. These are official statistics in development
  • Excess Under 75 Mortality Rates in Adults With Serious Mental Illness, 2021 to 2023 - (NHSE) This indicator is a measure of the extent to which adults with a serious mental illness (SMI) die younger than adults without a serious mental illness (nSMI).
  • Health Survey for England, 2021 part 2: Loneliness and wellbeing - (NHSE) Data on loneliness and wellbeing by age, sex, region, income, area deprivation, BMI and physical activity status, general health and living arrangements as well as trend data
  • Health Survey for England, 2022 part 2: Mental Health - (NHSE) A short chapter with commentary and data on the prevalence of mental ill health according to GHQ-12, by age and sex, and by area deprivation.
  • Links between parental mental health, child mental health and school outcomes, England: 2021 to 2022 - (ONS) Analytical insights into the bi-directional relationship between a child’s mental health and their parents’ mental health. The insights form part of a British Academy-funded collaboration with Loughborough University, using linked data to explore the factors associated with children’s mental health.
  • Mental Health Bulletin, 2024-25 Annual report - (NHSE) This publication provides the most detailed picture available of people who used NHS funded secondary mental health, learning disabilities and autism services in England during the financial year 2024-25

  • Mental Health Monthly Statistics - (NHSE) Statistical publication providing the timeliest picture available of people using NHS funded secondary mental health, learning disabilities and autism services in England
  • Mental Health of Children and Young People in England, 2023 - (NHSE) This report presents findings from the fourth (wave 4) in a series of follow up reports to the 2017 Mental Health of Children and Young People (MHCYP) survey, conducted in 2023. 2,370 children and young people who took part in the MHCYP 2017 survey took part in the wave 4 follow up. The mental health of children and young people aged 8 to 25 years living in England in 2023 is examined, as well as their household circumstances, and their experiences of education and services and of life in their families and communities.
  • Mortality from leading causes of death by ethnic group, England and Wales: 2012 to 2019 - (ONS) Experimental analysis of ethnic differences in mortality and cause-specific mortality in England and Wales based on 2011 Census and death registrations. Whilst this article explores a wide range of causes of death, section 6 'other causes of death' explores the variation in suicide rates by ethnic group.
  • National Confidential Inquiry into Suicide and Safety in Mental Health. Annual Report 2025: UK patient and general population data 2012-2022 - (NCISH, University of Manchester) This annual report provides findings relating to people aged ten and above who died by suicide between 2012 and 2022 across the UK. The report has several chapters, but has an in-depth section on 'Mental health patient suicide'; exploring method of suicide, social and clinical characteristics, and diagnosis and service contact. NCISH also has several other reports exploring suicide in nurses, middle-aged men, people in contact with drug and alcohol services, and many more.
  • National GP Profiles: Mental Health - (OHID) Fingertips profile with a section on mental health including indicators on depression, dementia and other mental health disorders 
  • Near to real-time suspected suicide surveillance (nRTSSS) for England - (OHID) Official statistics covering monthly reporting of deaths by suspected suicide, acting as an early warning system for indications of change in suicides to inform suicide prevention
  • NHS Talking Therapies - NHS Digital publication series makes available the most recent NHS Talking Therapies monthly data, including activity, waiting times, and outcomes such as recovery. This publication series also includes statistics about NHS Talking Therapies employment advisor services
  • Out of area placements in mental health - (NHSE) Statistics on out of area placements in acute inpatient mental health services in England from NHS and independent providers. Please note - this has moved to Mental Health Services Monthly Statistics - NHS England Digital.
  • Perinatal, children and young people's mental health | Fingertips - (OHID) Fingertips profile combining the previous versions of the 'Perinatal mental health' and 'Children and young people's mental health and wellbeing' profiles released. Contains data on key indicators, identification of need, factors affecting perinatal mental health, factors affecting children and young people's mental health, and services and outcomes.
  • Perinatal mental health condition prevalence - (OHID) Report on the prevalence of perinatal mental health conditions in women in 2019 and indicator updates to the perinatal mental health profile on Fingertips
  • Place-based suicide dashboard - (OHID) Uses annual ONS death registration data to explore deaths from suicide by place of death, elsewhere deaths by local authority of residence and by local authority of death.   • Zero Suicide alliance - The website contains data insights which allows you to compare suicide related data to other local authorities or sub-ICBs across England and data maps which contain an interactive map tool which shares data on suicide, suicide risk factors, and mental health and wellbeing in England. The map pulls data together from multiple sources, including over 100 indicators related to suicide incidence, health and social risk factors, at risk populations, and service demand and provision.
