Welcome to ONR news

Hello everyone.

Welcome to the latest edition of ONR News, keeping you updated about our work as the UK’s nuclear regulator for safety, security and safeguards.

Rachel Grant

It's been a little while since I last wrote to you due to a slight pause in our normal external communications during the run-up to the General Election which has now brought a new government, ruling party and Prime Minister leading the country.

We will work with the new administration and any ambitions it has for the nuclear sector while maintaining our role as the independent regulator to always ensure the highest standards of safety, security and safeguards within the industry and for the public.

A lot has happened in the last two months, with our granting of a nuclear site licence for the proposed Sizewell C nuclear power plant and our Corporate Plan for 2024/25 being published in Parliament - setting out our role of influencing improvements and holding the industry to account where there have been shortfalls.

We have also progressed the prosecution of Sellafield Limited for information technology security shortfalls as we continue to urge dutyholders to ensure they have the required leadership skills to tackle cyber security risks – an ongoing regulatory priority for the industry - and manage these appropriately.

Finally, we were very proud to share that our interim Chair Judith Hackitt was recently presented with the prestigious President’s Medal by the Royal Academy of Engineering for her longstanding contributions to chemical and systems engineering and engineering safety.

If you haven’t already visited our new website, I’d urge you to take a look and hope you find it a more modern and accessible platform on which to find information about ONR and our past and ongoing work and decisions.

As always, if you have any comments about ONR, any of the topics included in this newsletter, or our work in general, please get in touch via contact@onr.gov.uk.

Best wishes

Rachel Grant

International nuclear regulatory transport collaboration

Members of the Mediterranean Transport Safety Network (MedNet) recently visited our headquarters to strengthen international working links and promote best practices within Europe for the safe carriage of radioactive material.

Inspectors from the Maltese and Slovenian nuclear regulatory bodies arrived in the UK to collaborate with our Transport Competent Authority (TCA) and continue progressing harmonisation and continuous improvements in global radiation and transport safety.

Joseph Cremona, from the Maltese Commission for the Protection From Ionising and Non-Ionising Radiation, and Zoran Petrovic, from the Slovenian Nuclear Safety Administration, observed one of our transport compliance inspections in Wales and attended a TCA training course during their visit.

MedNet was created in 2015 and its Member States include many countries in the European Southern neighbourhood region.

ONR nuclear apprentices graduation moment

Congratulations to our first cohort of Nuclear Degree Apprentices, who recently graduated after five years of gaining work experience with us while completing their degrees.

Jordan Downie, Jamie Finn and Lucy Ingham have been working towards their Level 6 Nuclear Scientist & Nuclear Engineer Standard, supported by Blackpool and the Fylde College, alongside a BEng (Hons) Degree in Nuclear Engineering through Lancaster University.

Apprenticeships play a key role in our commitment to introducing new talent pipelines for recruiting and training the next generation of nuclear specialists and corporate staff.

Jordan, Jamie and Lucy are now pursuing postgraduate studies and roles in the nuclear sector.

Our mission is to protect society by securing safe nuclear operations
