Why aren’t passenger services running yet on the new Oxford-Milton Keynes route?
We know people are eager to start using the first phase of the East West Rail connection. Our role has been to oversee the delivery of the railway infrastructure – including track, signalling and the new station at Winslow – which is all complete.
The next step is for the operator, Chiltern Railways, to begin running passenger services. Chiltern have made progress – including recruiting and training new drivers, preparing trains, and setting up new facilities along the route – but there’s still work needed before services can safely and reliably begin. This includes final preparations to trains, completion and handover processes at stations, and agreeing operating arrangements for the route.
As part of this, Chiltern is also working closely with the Department for Transport and the relevant trade unions to finalise the procedures needed to operate the service safely from day one.
We know this delay is frustrating, especially with the infrastructure ready, and we’re continuing to work closely with Chiltern, Government and industry partners to support their progress. Our shared goal remains the same: delivering a safe, reliable service linking Oxford and Milton Keynes for the first time in nearly 60 years.
