Water Innovation Missions  

There is a need for more joined-up, collaborative approaches to solve the water sector’s most complex and strategically important challenges. The Water Innovation Missions (previously, the Collaborative Challenge) is a new open innovation programme with £40 million available over five years to incentivise and support the development of new solutions to sector-wide issues, which deliver tangible benefits for customers, communities and the environment, whilst unlocking long-term, system-wide change.

We expect the Water Innovation Missions programme to explore:

• Significant shared challenges affecting the majority of water companies, their customers and the environment
• Complex issues, requiring progress against multiple contributory barriers to solve them, and where solutions may require bringing together multiple disciplines
• Ambitious problems that are too big to be undertaken by a single, or even a few, organisations and may require new ways of working to solve them

We are currently researching possible problems and will be engaging with problem experts and sector stakeholders over the coming months.
