Summary

• You will be based on the Paediatric wards in York
• To assist and support members of the multi-professional team in order to provide a high standard of patient - cantered care; performing duties without the need for constant direct supervision.

Whether helping with personal care, monitoring vital signs, or assisting with mobility and nutrition, your contribution will be essential to patient safety, dignity, and recovery.

You’ll need strong clinical awareness, adaptability, and commitment to excellence. Responsibilities include collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, contributing to care planning, maintaining accurate documentation, and mentoring junior staff to foster learning and improvement. As a HCSW you will:
• Assist patients with care needs ensuring that each patient’s physical needs are met with sensitivity and respect, using moving and handling techniques where needed
• Support patients with nutritional needs, offering assistance with meals and hydration
• Monitoring and recording clinical observations is a key aspect of the role. HCSWs are trained to take vital signs such as blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and oxygen saturation, and to report any concerning changes to the nursing or medical team.
• Support clinicians in clinics and assist with weighing and measuring children, during examinations and during procedures
• Undertake paediatric venepuncture and cannulation with appropriate support and training
• Carry out investigations such as 12 lead ECG, POCT investigations and simple wound dressings
• Undertake bladder scanning as required
• Communicate with children, their families and carers appropriately, supporting the clinical workforce in the care and management of the child
• Provide distraction to children where needed utilising play where appropriate
• Ensure the principles of safeguarding are followed at all times
• Clean and disinfect clinical areas as required
• Safely dispose of clinical waste
• Assist with admissions and discharges

You must be able to commit to our Full Time HCSW Academy for the first 3 weeks of your employment with our Trust. Please note our HCSW Academy takes place at our training site in Holgate, York. We are unable to provide travel options or reimburse travel costs for attendance at this.
