Summary

Rolling Stock Engineer – Fleet Engineering
Location: Derby
Contract: 6 Months
Shift Pattern: 40 hours per week | 4 on / 4 off rota | Days & Nights required
Rate: Negotiable


An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Rolling Stock Engineer to join a leading organisation within the rail industry, supporting the safe and reliable operation of a modern intercity fleet based in Derby.
Working within a highly technical Fleet Engineering team, you will play a key role in fault investigation, reliability improvement, and fleet performance optimisation across one of the UK’s most advanced rolling stock operations.


Key Responsibilities
• Lead technical investigations into fleet faults, delays, and safety-related incidents, identifying root causes through train data analysis and engineering diagnostics.
• Review and manage defects through the Maintenance Management System (MMS), ensuring repeat and safety-critical defects are effectively controlled and resolved.
• Support fleet reliability by identifying emerging trends impacting safety and performance.
• Provide technical guidance to maintenance teams, supporting fault finding, repairs, and engineering decision-making.
• Develop and improve Vehicle Maintenance Instructions (VMIs), Vehicle Maintenance Procedures (VMPs), and fault-finding guides.
• Conduct risk assessments as part of concession and dispensation processes.
• Collaborate with engineering, planning, production, suppliers, and customers to drive continuous fleet improvement.
• Support the ongoing enhancement of fleet monitoring and data analysis tools.


Essential Skills & Experience
• Experience providing engineering support within a modern rolling stock maintenance depot environment.
• Strong safety awareness within operational railway engineering.
• Previous rolling stock experience, ideally involving modern fleet introduction or technical support.
• Experience using Maintenance Management Systems (MMS) and analysing reliability/performance trends.
• Knowledge of depot operations, material management, and spare parts logistics.
• Experience supporting technical operations at depots, stabling points, or main line stations.
• Ability to obtain Network Rail Sentinel PTS certification.


Qualifications
• HNC qualified (or equivalent engineering qualification/railway experience).
• Previous experience in reliability engineering and product improvement on UK rolling stock.
