Advanced Nurse Practitioner Job description TitleAdvanced Nurse Practitioner (General Practice) SalaryBand 8a (Agenda for Change or equivalent under ARRS where applicable) Reports to: GP Partners Accountable toPractice Manager Line Management: As agreed within practice structure Job Summary The post holder will be an experienced Advanced Nurse Practitioner working at a Master's level (Level 8), holding or working towards a recognised MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice and associated digital credential/badge evidencing advanced practice capabilities. They will demonstrate highly developed clinical decision-making, critical thinking, and autonomous practice within defined professional boundaries. The ANP will assess, diagnose, treat, and manage patients presenting with both acute and chronic conditions, ensuring safe, evidence-based, and patient-centred care. The role includes leadership, service development, and collaborative working across the multidisciplinary team to support high-quality service delivery aligned with national policy and local priorities. Key Responsibilities Clinical Practice Work within a defined scope of practice, with appropriate clinical supervision and governance arrangements. Independently assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate care for patients with undifferentiated and complex conditions Contribute to triage systems and improve patient access (e.g. digital consultations, same-day care) Provide expert clinical management of acute and long-term conditions Prescribe safely and effectively in line with prescribing qualifications and current guidelines Initiate appropriate investigations and interpret results Deliver health promotion, prevention, and self-management support Recognise and respond to urgent and emergency presentations appropriately Monitor and manage patients with long-term conditions, including requesting, reviewing, and actioning routine blood tests in line with agreed protocols Provide follow-up and continuity of care for complex patients Communication Communicate effectively with patients, carers, and professionals using clear, inclusive, and accessible approaches Adapt communication styles to meet individual needs, including use of digital and alternative communication methods Act as an advocate for patients, ensuring informed choice and consent Leadership & Service Development Act as a clinical leader within the multidisciplinary team Support service improvement, innovation, and quality initiatives Contribute to policy development and implementation at practice level Promote the ANP role within primary care and wider healthcare systems Quality & Governance Maintain accurate, contemporaneous clinical records in line with governance standards Participate in audit, quality improvement, and clinical governance processes Support learning from incidents, complaints, and near misses Team Working Work collaboratively within the MDT, including GPs, nurses, pharmacists, and external agencies Support staff development, supervision, and mentorship Contribute to a positive learning environment within the practice Learning & Development Maintain continuing professional development in line with NMC requirements Hold or be working towards an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice Maintain a recognised digital badge/credential portfolio evidencing competencies and advanced practice skills Engage in clinical supervision and reflective practice
