Summary

Biomedical Scientist (BMS) Key Responsibilities
  • Perform analytical testing and validation of patient samples within Blood Sciences disciplines.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory analysers and automation systems.
  • Process urgent, routine, and specialist investigations accurately and within turnaround times.
  • Review and authorise results in line with SOPs, competency levels, and quality standards.
  • Participate in IQC/EQA programmes and maintain compliance with ISO 15189 and UKAS standards.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and ensure sample traceability.
  • Follow Health & Safety, COSHH, and infection control procedures.
  • Support the training of junior staff and contribute to service improvement initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively with clinicians, nurses, and laboratory colleagues to support patient care.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
  • Degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent recognised qualification.
  • HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist.
  • IBMS accredited degree.
  • Experience working within a Blood Sciences or Pathology laboratory.
  • Knowledge of Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Coagulation, or Blood Transfusion.
  • Experience using LIMS and understanding laboratory quality standards.
Essential Skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to prioritise workload in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Competent IT and data management abilities.
Desirable
  • IBMS Specialist Portfolio completion.
  • NHS laboratory experience.
  • Experience with laboratory automation, audits, validations, or quality improvement projects.
  • Flexible approach to shift and out-of-hours working.
Working Conditions
  • Shift, weekend, and on-call working may be required.
  • Role involves handling biological specimens in a regulated clinical laboratory environment.
