Summary
About the Role
This is a unique, varied, and hands on role combining animal care, woodland and habitat management, and education support for learners and volunteers. You’ll be part of a small, dedicated team helping to maintain high welfare standards for our animals, support sustainable woodland practices, and deliver engaging, practical learning experiences for students and community groups.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives outdoors, enjoys working with people, and is passionate about animal welfare, conservation, and inclusive education.
Key Responsibilities:
Animal Technician Duties
• Carry out daily husbandry for a range of farm and small animals (feeding, watering, grooming, mucking out, enrichment).
• Monitor animal health and behaviour; report concerns promptly.
• Assist with routine health checks, treatments, and record keeping in line with welfare legislation.
• Maintain clean, safe, and species appropriate enclosures.
• Support biosecurity measures, including disinfection procedures and zoonosis control.
• Ensure compliance with the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and relevant farm assurance standards.
Woodlands & Conservation Duties
• Support woodland maintenance including coppicing, planting, habitat creation, and path management.
• Use hand tools and small machinery safely (training provided where needed).
• Assist with biodiversity monitoring and conservation projects.
• Maintain safe working areas in line with Health & Safety and environmental best practice.
• Contribute to sustainable land use planning and seasonal woodland tasks.
Education Support Duties
• Assist tutors in delivering practical sessions for college learners, school groups, and community visitors.
• Prepare resources, equipment, and animals for practical lessons.
• Demonstrate safe handling, welfare assessment, and husbandry techniques during sessions.
• Support learners with varying needs, ensuring sessions are inclusive and accessible.
• Help develop worksheets, practical guides, and enrichment activities.
• Supervise small groups during practical tasks in the farm or woodland environment.
Person Specification
Essential:
Experience working with animals in a farm, sanctuary, or educational setting. Confidence handling a range of species (e.g., sheep, goats, poultry, small mammals). Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Strong communication skills and a supportive, learner focused approach. Good understanding of health & safety, PPE, and risk assessment principles. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Willingness to work flexibly, including weekends and seasonal tasks.
Desirable:
Experience in woodland management, conservation, or horticulture. Experience supporting teaching or training sessions. Qualifications in Animal Care, Land based Studies, Forestry, or similar. First Aid qualification (human or animal). Knowledge of UK welfare legislation and environmental standards.
