Fatigue

Work practices that manage fatigue risk

Occupational Health and Safety is one of the five key risk areas that industry will address through the Rail Health and Safety Strategy (the Strategy). The risk area covers occupational health and safety  and fatigue.

Introduction

Fatigue is a multifaceted issue that affects many aspects of the railway's operations. Although it does not lead to specific types of incidents, it is often a significant underlying cause.

Improvements will require a cultural change as well as a holistic wellbeing and medical screening approach. New technologies, tools, and strategies can support industry deliver the least fatiguing operations, capture actual hours worked and provide incentives for overtime.

The Strategy is aiming to achieve ‘work practices that manage fatigue risk’. The strategic initiatives to address this critical risk area are listed below.

  • Strategic initiatives:
    • Driver attention and alertness monitoring trial.
    • Tools for effective rostering and planning decisions developed.
    • Fatigue reporting processes optimised (including dashboard options).
    • Fatigue issues embedded in medical screening and holistic wellbeing considerations.
    • Proactive fatigue risk management across industry aligned with ORR guidance.
