Sustainable Insights
Our toolkit helps by:
- collating the industry’s sustainability data together in one place
- creating and sharing intelligence to drive data-led decision making
- defining the metrics the industry uses to measure sustainability performance.
The Reporting Tool
Please note that the Reporting Tool is undergoing updates to reflect new reporting requirements and improve the user interface. These updates will be available by the end of June 2026 ready for reporting.
To help the industry make the case for sustainable rail, we have created the Sustainable Insights Reporting Tool. All rail organisations can use it to enter, review, and submit data to the RSSB Insights Platform. The reporting tool has two main benefits:
- it allows operators with rail passenger contracts to submit data to the Department for Transport (DfT).
- the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) can view and export data relevant to annual data collection.
Your guide to reporting
Tailored reporting templates are available to support your data entry.
The templates standardise regulatory reporting. They also provide best practice reporting recommendations on the topics set out in the Sustainable Rail Blueprint.
They were developed in partnership with DfT and ORR, and industry stakeholders.
This approach helps form baselines, share best practice, and measure and report progress. It supports sustainable development across rail.
Guidance templates for ROSCOs and infrastructure managers are still in development with relevant stakeholders.

The Data Hub
The Sustainable Insights Data Hub is an online, easily accessible platform that is free for members to use. It visualises data gathered via the Sustainable Insights Reporting Tool, and other relevant open access data sources. The hub aims to provide members with company insights and industry benchmarking to drive strategic data-driven decisions, which can be used for future setting of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
Pilot Programme
RSSB will be conducting a pilot of the Sustainable Insights Data Hub between April and June 2026. This pilot will ensure the intelligence generated within the tool is driven by member requirements and gives users the most valuable insights for the rail industry. The feedback gathered during this period will inform future enhancements, and ensure the tool supports data-driven decision making and strategic benchmarking effectively.
