Continuous sustainable reduction in trespass and suicide

Public behaviour is one of five key risk areas that the Rail Health and Safety Strategy (the Strategy) will address. Public behaviour covers trespass and suicide, passenger and staff assaults and level crossings.

Introduction

The railway recognises the duty of care it owes to all who enter its boundary. It is aware of the impact trespass and suicide events have on the safety, health, and wellbeing of staff and passengers.

Going forward, good quality data, consistent information, working with partners, new technology, and public awareness campaign will facilitate more cohesive action.

The Strategy aims to deliver a ‘continuous sustainable reduction in trespass and suicide’. The strategic initiatives to address this critical risk area are listed below.

  • Strategic initiatives:
    • Accessible trespass and suicide prevention knowledge.
    • Simplified guidance for trespass reduction.
    • Create good practice guide for suicide prevention.
    • Rail safety on the education curriculum.
    • Agreed industry action based on research and intelligence.
    • Delivered a single version of the truth on trespass data.
