Where we use rail standards

Introduction

Railway standards are used across the industry to ensure safety, efficiency, and interoperability. They provide a common framework for how trains operate, infrastructure is built, and safety is maintained. This leads to reduced risks, lower costs, and simpler planning.

Control, command and signalling
Standards, guidance, and resources on the equipment and infrastructure that ensures the safe and efficient movement of trains.
Data, systems and telematics
Standards, guidance, and resources on the technologies and processes used to collect, transmit, and manage data related to train operations, infrastructure, and passenger information.
Energy
Standards, guidance, and resources on the power supplied to move trains along the track, including electricity, diesel, hydrogen, and batteries.
Infrastructure
Standards, guidance, and resources on the various aspects of infrastructure, including design, operation, maintenance, and safety management systems.
Plant
Standards, guidance, and resources on portable/transportable machinery/vehicles used for the maintenance and inspection of track, structures, track formation, and fixed electric traction equipment.
Rolling stock
Standards, guidance, and resources on the design, construction, and maintenance of rail vehicles.
Traffic operation and management
Standards, guidance, and resources on how different railway subsystems interact – for example, rolling stock, infrastructure, and signalling – and how staff carry out their duties.
