An opportunity has arisen for a full time Speech and Language Therapist, either newly qualified or with more experience, with a passion for working with people with a learning disability.

Dependent upon experience, the successful applicant will either commence as a Band 5 and progress to a band 6, or commence at Band 6, please discuss at interview for more information regarding this.

This role is to work as part of a multidisciplinary team with adults with a learning disability. The post is 0.5 with the Community Learning Disability Team in and 0.5 at Greenways, Assessment and Treatment Unit, both bases are on the same site in Macclesfield.

As a key member of both teams you will have opportunities to develop your skills across a range of clinical areas including AAC, Total Communication, Higher level language difficulties and dysphagia.

You will be a valued member of our MDT, providing a specialist service providing assessments and interventions, you will be supported within your role by the unit team and wider service. You will work alongside more experienced SLTs to consolidate and develop your skills. If completing your Newly Qualified Competencies full support will be given.



You will provide assessment, treatment and intervention to service users who have learning disability and communication and/ or eating and drinking difficulties (dysphagia training will be provided as needed).

You will apply competence in core speech and language therapy skills to the learning disability field, supporting people with learning disabilities who experience a wide range of communication difficulties, including supporting people who use behaviours of concern, identifying strategies to be included in PBS plans and model communication strategies to help reduce behaviours.

You will have the ability to manage his/her time to prioritise tasks and consult with more senior clinicians when this is required.

Due to the multi-disciplinary nature of the role, you will work collaboratively with all appropriate agencies to ensure there is effective communication so the service can provide a high quality service to patients.

You will provide appropriate information, advice and support to patients and carers, demonstrating empathy and ensuring that effective communication is achieved where barriers to understanding exist.

Within our services we are always wanting to look at how best to provide the most effective service for people who access it and this includes carrying out QI projects and research. There are links with CANDDID, the Centre for Autism Neurodevelopmental disorders and Intellectual Disabilities, which supports projects being carried out.
