What skills and experience we're looking for

Essential:

• Experience working with children (preferably primary age)
• Understanding of children’s emotional and social development
• Strong communication and listening skills
• Ability to build rapport and trust with young children
• Calm, patient, and empathetic approach
• Ability to handle sensitive situations with discretion

Desirable:

• Training in mental health, counselling, or child development
• Experience supporting children with SEND, SEMH, or trauma
• Knowledge of safeguarding practices in schools

Personal Qualities

• Compassionate and approachable
• Resilient and emotionally aware
• Reliable and professional
• Flexible and adaptable
• Positive role model for pupils

Qualifications

• Minimum: GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths
• Relevant qualifications (e.g. childcare, psychology, counselling, or wellbeing support) are desirable

Further details about the role

Key Responsibilities

• Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils experiencing emotional, social, or behavioural difficulties
• Help children develop coping strategies, resilience, and self-esteem
• Identify early signs of mental health or wellbeing concerns and respond appropriately
• Work closely with teachers to support pupils who may be struggling in the classroom
• Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils as a consistent adult mentor
• Support pupils during unstructured times (e.g. break/lunch) where needed
• Deliver or support wellbeing programmes (e.g. emotional literacy, mindfulness, social skills)
• Maintain accurate records of interventions, progress, and outcomes
• Liaise with parents/carers to support pupils’ wellbeing where appropriate
• Work with external professionals (e.g. counsellors, educational psychologists, safeguarding teams)
• Promote a positive, inclusive, and supportive school environment
• Liaise with teachers and parents to overcome barriers to attendance

Safeguarding Responsibilities

• Follow all school safeguarding and child protection policies
• Report concerns about pupils’ welfare in line with school procedures
• Maintain appropriate professional boundaries at all times
