Head of Science – Full-time, long-term supply role starting September 2026
These long-term supply opportunities are ideal for an experienced Head of Science who enjoys providing leadership, continuity, and strategic direction across secondary school settings. Working on long-term supply allows a Head of Science to make a meaningful impact by leading curriculum delivery, supporting colleagues, and maintaining high standards of teaching and learning, while benefiting from the flexibility of a supply arrangement across schools in the local area.
Duties as Head of Science:
- Lead and manage the Science department on a long-term supply basis
- Oversee curriculum planning and delivery across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4
- Ensure high standards of teaching, learning, and assessment within Science
- Support and mentor Science teachers, including ECTs where appropriate
- Monitor pupil progress and contribute to strategies that raise attainment
- Ensure GCSE Science specifications are delivered effectively
- Maintain consistent behaviour and classroom expectations across the department
- Contribute to whole-school priorities and leadership initiatives
- Uphold safeguarding responsibilities and promote pupil wellbeing at all times
- Represent Step Teachers professionally while working as a Head of Science
Ideal Head of Science:
- Qualified Teacher Status or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification
- Proven experience as a Head of Science or in a senior Science leadership role
- Strong subject knowledge and experience teaching GCSE Science
- Confident leadership, communication, and organisational skills
- Ability to support, develop, and motivate teaching staff
- Strong classroom and behaviour management skills
- A reliable, adaptable, and committed approach to long-term supply work
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people
- A proactive and professional attitude as a Head of Science
