Job Description


Job Title: SEND Teaching Assistant
Location: Schools and Specialist SEND Provisions in Middleton, Greater Manchester
Reports to: Class Teacher / SENCO / Inclusion Lead / Senior Leadership Team
Contract Type: Long-term

To support pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) within mainstream or specialist educational settings, helping to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment. The role involves working closely with teaching staff and SEND professionals to support pupils' educational, emotional, social, and behavioural development in line with individual learning needs and education plans.

• Support the class teacher in delivering differentiated learning activities tailored to pupils' individual needs
• Provide one-to-one and small group support for pupils with SEND, including ASD, ADHD, SEMH, speech and language needs, and learning difficulties
• Encourage pupil engagement, independence, confidence, and participation in learning activities
• Adapt resources and learning strategies to meet pupils' communication and developmental needs
• Monitor and record pupil progress, providing feedback to teaching staff and SEND teams

• Support pupils' emotional, social, and behavioural development
• Promote positive behaviour, emotional regulation, and social interaction
• Assist pupils with transitions throughout the school day and support anxiety management where required
• Support personal care routines where necessary, maintaining dignity and respect at all times
• Build positive and professional relationships with pupils to support trust and engagement

• Implement Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), behaviour support plans, and intervention programmes under guidance from the SENCO or teacher
• Support pupils with sensory, communication, or behavioural needs using appropriate strategies and resources
• Promote inclusion and equal access to learning opportunities for all pupils
• Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, parents/carers, and external professionals to support pupil outcomes

• Safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people at all times
• Maintain awareness of safeguarding, child protection, PREVENT, and SEND-specific safeguarding procedures
• Follow health, safety, hygiene, and risk assessment procedures rigorously
• Report safeguarding, wellbeing, or behavioural concerns promptly in line with school policies
• Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality at all times

• Work collaboratively with teaching staff, SEND teams, and external agencies
• Prepare learning materials and maintain a safe, structured, and stimulating learning environment
• Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and reviews relating to SEND provision where required
• Participate in ongoing professional development related to SEND, behaviour support, and safeguarding
• Uphold school values, policies, and professional standards at all times

• Experience working with children or young people with SEND in a school, care, or support setting
• Understanding of a range of SEND needs, including ASD, ADHD, SEMH, and learning difficulties
• Ability to build positive relationships with pupils who may require additional emotional or behavioural support
• Strong communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills
• Patient, calm, nurturing, and adaptable approach
• Understanding of safeguarding and child protection responsibilities
• Enhanced DBS certificate on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one)

• Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant or SEND qualification
• Experience supporting pupils with EHCPs or complex needs
• Knowledge of behaviour management, sensory support, or communication strategies such as PECS or Makaton
• Experience within a specialist school, SEND provision, or mainstream inclusion setting
• Team Teach, de-escalation, First Aid, or safeguarding training
• Experience supporting personal care routines



• Commitment to promoting inclusion, wellbeing, and positive outcomes for pupils with SEND
• Flexibility to work across different schools and SEND environments within Middleton and surrounding areas
• Ability to respond calmly and professionally to challenging situations
• Willingness to undertake ongoing SEND and safeguarding training
• Commitment to maintaining high standards of professionalism, care, and pupil support



This role is subject to an Enhanced DBS (child and adult workforce), satisfactory references, and full compliance with KCSIE (2024) guidance and safer recruitment standards.
