COMMUNITY CENTRE CARETAKER (2 PART-TIME POSTS)

Summary
Job Purpose
To ensure the community centre is safe, clean, secure, and fully operational for all users. The caretaker team will support the day-to-day running of the building, including security, cleaning, maintenance, room setup, and health & safety compliance.
Hours
Each post is 16 hours per week.
The two postholders will jointly cover the duties of one full-time role and are expected to work flexibly, including evenings and weekends.
Saturday working will be shared fairly between both postholders on a rotating rota basis. Rotas may be adjusted periodically to meet operational requirements and community bookings.
Postholders will be required to provide reasonable cover for each other’s annual leave and occasional sickness absence.
Contract Type
Fixed-term temporary contract for approximately 9–12 months to cover long-term sickness absence.
Two part-time employees will be appointed to jointly cover one full-time post. Continued employment or permanency will be subject to the return status of the substantive postholder, organisational requirements, and satisfactory performance.
Key Responsibilities
Security and Access
• Open and close the building as required
• Operate alarm and security systems
• Ensure the building is secure at all times
• Monitor access to the premises and report concerns
• Respond to emergency call-outs if required
Maintenance
• Carry out minor repairs and general maintenance tasks
• Replace light bulbs, fix minor faults, and report major defects
• Monitor heating, lighting, plumbing, and general building condition
• Liaise with contractors when necessary
Cleaning and Hygiene
• Maintain cleanliness of communal areas, toilets, kitchens, halls/rooms, and external areas
• Empty bins and replenish supplies
• Ensure the centre remains clean, tidy, and presentable for users and events
Health and Safety
• Carry out routine health and safety inspections
• Ensure fire exits and escape routes remain clear
• Conduct basic safety checks on equipment and facilities
• Check fire alarms and emergency lighting
• Report accidents, hazards, or unsafe conditions
Room Setup and Events
• Prepare rooms for activities, meetings, and community events
• Arrange tables, chairs, and equipment according to bookings
• Support community groups using the facilities
• Reset rooms after use
• Provide practical support during events where necessary
Grounds and External Areas
• Keep entrances, pathways, and outdoor areas clean and safe
• Undertake basic outdoor maintenance including window cleaning, grass cutting, litter picking, and gritting during winter conditions
• Monitor car parks and external lighting
Administration
• Maintain maintenance and inspection records
• Report stock shortages and operational concerns
• Complete incident and accident records when required
• Ensure health and safety records and risk assessments are kept up to date
Customer Service
• Provide a welcoming and helpful presence for centre users
• Respond professionally to enquiries and issues
• Support community groups and hirers using the facilities
