Summary

Help us make Cheltenham’s homes safer, healthier, and better for everyone. We’re looking for a skilled Senior Environmental Health Officer to join our Housing Standards team and play a key role in improving private sector housing across the borough.

What you’ll do
• Inspect private sector housing and HMOs, applying the Housing Act and related legislation.
• Lead on enforcement: gather evidence, serve notices, and support legal proceedings.
• Advise landlords, tenants, and partners on housing standards and compliance.
• Support and monitor grant/loan-funded works and works in default.
• Investigate complaints on housing conditions, overcrowding, drainage, nuisance and more.
• Work closely with our Counter Fraud Team on renters’ rights, with Building Control, Planning, and external professionals.
• Represent the Council at tribunals, court hearings and working groups.
What you’ll bring
• Degree/MSc in Environmental Health + HHSRS training.
• EHRB registration or enrolled on the CIEH Chartered Practitioner Programme.
• Experience enforcing Housing Act/Public Health legislation and working with HMOs.
• Strong communication, analytical and report writing skills.
• Confidence handling challenging situations and managing your own caseload.
