Summary

The following are the core responsibilities of the GPA. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks. This will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels: To liaise with patients, the public and other healthcare professionals as necessary. To be proficient at prioritising and organising administrative work generated by hospitals, Health Authority, Primary Care Organisations, patients etc., and to share workload with other administrative staff as necessary. To receive incoming and initiate outgoing telephone calls to deal with appropriate queries. Arranging appointments, referrals, tests and follow up appointments of patient. Communicate effectively with patients and carers, recognising their needs for alternative methods of communication. Complete simple clinical observations/investigations as directed locally, such as dipstick urine, blood pressure, BMIs ECG and phlebotomy Develops extended clinical responsibilities following appropriate training such as NHS health checks. There may also be opportunities to train into enhanced duties such as Minor Surgery Assistant, depending upon service demand and individual capability. To support in the implement vaccination programmes for adults and children Contribute to public health campaigns - flu clinics through advice or direct care, including opportunistic health promotional programmes To be instrumental in the support of the Infection Prevention Control lead and to work to the IPC requirements by providing audits, training, support and evidence of compliance to the practice manager To assess the needs of patients ensuring the provision of healthcare is appropriate, incorporating evidence-based practice To maintain accurate clinical records in conjunction with extant legislation To support the team in dealing with clinical emergencies To liaise with external services/agencies to ensure the patient is supported appropriately - vulnerable patients etc. To delegate clinical responsibilities appropriately - ensuring safe practice and the task is within the scope of practice of the individual To support the clinical team with all safeguarding matters, in accordance with local and national policies Support the delivery of QOF, incentive schemes, QIPP and other quality or cost effectiveness initiatives Recognise own knowledge limits and seek advice from clinical or administrative colleagues as appropriate. To provide cover for members of the administrative team during periods of sickness and annual leave. To deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate and support patients to adopt health promotion strategies that promote healthy lifestyles and apply principles of self-care Review all incoming correspondence and enter, using read codes, pertinent information into the patients electronic medical recording accordance with the coding protocol. This will include data highlighted by clinicians as well as data required to meet contractual obligations. Organise the medical record of patients whom you are coding, to harmonise problem titles, group symptom development and assign the appropriate status to medical information Ensure all clinical procedures are carried out safely, following practice protocols and infection prevention guidelines Undertake all mandatory training and induction programmes Attend a formal appraisal with their manager at least every 12 months. Once a performance/training objective has been set, progress will be reviewed on a regular basis so that new objectives can be agreed In addition to the primary key responsibilities, the GPA may be requested to: Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care Support and participate in shared learning within the practice in order to improve patient care Participate in the review of significant and near-miss events applying a structured approach ,i.e. root cause analysis Support the practice team with the reviewing and implementation of practice policies and protocols, ensuring conformance to extant legislation
