Description
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Appeals Officer to join our team in the Housing Benefit department at the PO2 level. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in managing and resolving appeals related to housing benefits, ensuring fairness, accuracy, and compliance with relevant legislation and policies. This position offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to the effective delivery of housing benefit services, working closely with claimants, legal representatives, and various internal departments. The Appeals Officer will handle complex casework, analyze evidence, prepare reports, and make informed decisions to uphold the integrity of the benefits system. Responsibilities
Manage and process appeals related to housing benefit decisions in a timely and efficient manner.
Review and evaluate evidence submitted by appellants and other parties to ensure accurate decision-making.
Prepare comprehensive case reports and recommendations for internal review or tribunal hearings.
Liaise with claimants, legal representatives, and other stakeholders to gather information and clarify case details.
Ensure compliance with housing benefit regulations, legislation, and internal policies throughout the appeals process.
Maintain detailed and accurate records of all appeals, correspondence, and decisions.
Provide guidance and advice to colleagues and other departments regarding appeals procedures and best practices.
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the appeals process and customer experience.
Attend and represent the department at tribunal hearings and other relevant meetings when required.
Requirements
Proven experience in managing benefit appeals or a similar administrative or decision-making role.
Strong knowledge of housing benefit legislation, policies, and procedures.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with diverse stakeholders.
Proficient in using case management systems and standard office software.
Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and manage a high caseload independently.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks efficiently.
Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive information appropriately.
Experience in preparing reports and presenting cases in formal settings is desirable.
