Patient Reported Outcome Measures
(PROMs)
Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) assess improvement in health and the quality of care delivered to patients, from the patient’s own perspective. PROMs calculate the health gains after surgical treatment through the use of a pre- and post-operative patient questionnaire.
PROMs is a national initiative devised to assess the quality of care delivered to NHS patients and also through the Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN). Patients undergoing elective inpatient surgery for hip and knee replacement, that is funded by the NHS are asked to complete questionnaires before and after their operations to assess their own experience of the improvement in their health.
When a pateint has a hip or knee replacement, they will be asked to fill in a PROMs (Patient Reported Outcome Measures) questionnaire. They will then be contacted approximately six months after their operation with a further invitation to fill out another, ‘follow-up’ questionnaire. The purpose of these questionnaires is to enable the NHS/ PHIN to measure the reported outcomes, and to improve the quality of care for all patients undergoing hip or knee joint replacement surgery.
You can find information on this national initiative here.
In addition to the national PROMs programme, the NJR also collects PROMs data from patients undergoing shoulder replacement surgery, for the same purpose as the national PROMs programme. Shoulder patients are asked to complete a questionnaire prior to their surgery and then again at six weeks, three years and five years.
