Chris' Experience

Engineering is such a varied and diverse department, there are so many opportunities such as technicians, yard controllers, fleet engineers, planners and more.

Training for engineering roles can vary depending on your pre-qualifications and the requirements of the role.

Before your day one, there will be a training needs analysis conducted to ensure you receive the correct training and support, including health and safety, skills and technical training.

Once you’ve been taken through your formal training, you’ll be placed with a mentor to train on the job until you are deemed experienced enough to undertake formal safety critical assessment (which is continuously conducted throughout the engineers work cycle) and on completion of this you will be awarded competencies which align with your growth within your roles. Usually this will take around a year to reach the expected high standards.

I joined the railway in 2014, I studied Mechanical Engineering at University and after graduating, I joined Greater Anglia as a Systems Engineer, looking at control and communications across all our trains. When Greater Anglia decided to replace its entire fleet with shiny new trains, I was given the opportunity to progress into the role of Fleet Engineering manager to support the delivery of the new trains.

For anyone thinking of being an engineer I think you need to have a problem-solving mindset, so if you are prepared to be faced with problems daily that you need to find solutions for this may be the role for you!

I’m lucky to be able to have had the opportunity to come into Greater Anglia and with the support of my managers and colleague’s guidance at the depot have continued to progress to where I am now.
