How do Anytime train tickets work?

Anytime train tickets are fully flexible, as you can travel any time of the day, and you can break your journey too! That's right, these tickets let you get off the train along the way and complete your journey later. Make sure to check the ticket conditions when booking first, as you might need to travel on a specific route or train company.

Anytime Day Singles and Anytime Day Returns are good for same-day journeys and can be found on shorter routes.

Anytime Singles and Anytime Returns are available for longer routes, and are good for those who want lots of flexibility, as you can do your outbound journey on a different day, and the return ticket lets you come back within 1 month.

Anytime train ticket types

There are four types of Anytime rail tickets. Unlike other daily tickets like Advance and Off-Peak tickets, there are no time restrictions so you can travel at any time of the day.

Anytime Day Single & Anytime Day Return train tickets

You can travel on the date shown on the ticket up to 04:29 the next morning.

Anytime Single train ticket

You can travel on the date shown on your ticket or the next day.

You must finish the journey by 04:29 the morning after the second day.

Anytime Return train ticket

You must make your outward journey within 5 days, including the date shown on your ticket. You must finish your journey by 04:29 on the morning after the fifth day.

You must make your return journey within one calendar month of the date shown on your ticket. At the latest, you must finish your journey by 04:29 on the morning after the last day of validity.

Anytime Day Travelcard (London)

The Anytime Day Travelcard is a same-day return train ticket to London and includes unlimited use of the transport network in Greater London. This covers the London Underground, London Overground, almost all other National Rail services, all scheduled London Buses, the DLR (Docklands Light Railway) and the London Tramlink system in south London.

Refunds on Anytime train tickets

You can request a refund until 23:59 the day before your booked travel date.

After this, you can still claim up to 28 days after your ticket expires if you didn't travel due to a train delay, cancellation or if an exceptional circumstance such as medical emergency has stopped you from travelling.

There is a £5 refund fee which may be deducted.

If you travelled with an Anytime ticket and your train was delayed by 15 minutes or more, you can claim delay repay compensation.
