Hunterston A site
Stuart McGhie
Vice Chair
I have been a voting member of the Hunterston SSG for the last 7/8 years serving as Vice Chair for the last five years. I was originally nominated to the SSG by Hunterston B site Trade Unions.
I started work as an apprentice electrical fitter at the Magnox station and when the AGR station went into operation I worked on the maintenance teams, shifts and days across both sites.
For many years I was seconded to a work optimisation team planning maintenance workload and in my last eight years of employment was a community liaison officer on and off site, promoting the industry politically, hosting site visits and talking to schools and external bodies.
During my employment I was with SSEB, Scottish Nuclear, British Energy and finally EDF energy – without actually leaving the Power Station!
I was heavily involved with the Trade Union side of the energy industry, negotiating company agreements, salaries and terms & conditions. I was elected to serve two terms (six years) on the executive of Unite Trade Union, representing energy workers, thereafter I served on the European works committee for EDF in Paris for six years.
I have a keen interest in the nuclear industry and believe my skills and knowledge make a positive contribution to the SSG.
I am now retired after working in the nuclear industry for 49 years.
