Oldbury site

Oldbury occupies 15 hectares on the bank of the River Severn in South Gloucestershire. The site moved into its decommissioning phase following the completion of defueling in 2016.

The spent fuel cooling ponds complex was placed into care and maintenance in 2025 following many years of complex and challenging decommissioning work.

Oldbury Technical Centre was the cornerstone of nuclear training excellence from the 1970s. Its complex of six buildings were demolished in 2025 clearing almost 5,000 m² of land for re-use.

The site is now focused on sorting and segregating fuel element debris (FED) from underground storage vaults and demolition work to pave the way for a 120m₂ facility housing the AutoSAS project to be constructed. This pioneering innovation will deploy robotics to remotely sort and segregate radioactive waste on a nuclear site for the first time in the UK.
