Wylfa site

Wylfa is located on a 21 hectare site on the north coast of Anglesey.

Wylfa was the final and most powerful Magnox reactor station to be built and the only one without a spent fuel cooling pond.

The site has been reshaped since decommissioning began in 2020 following reactor defueling:

• 44 buildings demolished
• Two major asbestos removal projects completed
• Intermediate-level waste cleared from dry store cell four
• New skip compound built and a waste clearance facility created

Work is underway to air gap pipework and cabling to isolate the turbine hall from the rest of the site in preparation for eventual demolition. A major infrastructure upgrade to install a new electrical distribution network to the site is also in progress.

The powered systems that controlled airflow and ventilation through the two reactors were permanently switched off in 2025. This achievement has simplified long term operational processes, enhanced environmental safety by eliminating the use of hazardous substances such as glycol and refrigerant gases and saved around £130,000 in annual energy costs.  Read the full story at: Wylfa reactors breathing naturally – GOV.UK
