Hinkley Point A site
Hinkley Point A is located on a 19 hectare site on the Somerset coast. It is uniquely positioned, adjacent to both an existing EDF advanced gas-cooled reactor (AGR) station (Hinkley Point B) and new-build EDF site (Hinkley Point C).
Significant progress has been made since Hinkley Point A began decommissioning in 2004. Major structures have been demolished and bulk asbestos removed from the boiler houses. The spent fuel cooling ponds were drained and decontaminated in 2015 as one of the most challenging in the NRS fleet due to higher sludge and radiation levels.
Today, the site’s focus is on safely retrieving, processing and storing post‑operational intermediate-level waste in a purpose‑built long-term storage facility, while progressively reducing risks and hazards as decommissioning continues.
Hinkley Point B will be the second AGR site to join NRS for decommissioning in autumn 2026.
