Hunterston A site

Hunterston A is located on 15 hectare site on a promontory off the Ayrshire coastline, 30 miles south-west of Glasgow.

Hunterston B transferred to NRS as the first advanced gas-cooled reactor (AGR) site for decommissioning on 1 April 2026.

One million gallons of contaminated water and more than 10 tonnes of redundant equipment were removed from the nuclear fuel cooling ponds in 2018. Work continues to fully decommission the facility.

A complex and challenging ten-year project to safely retrieve, package and store over 2,100 tonnes of solid radioactive waste from five bunkers completed in 2024.

Radioactive waste packages are permanently stored on site in accordance with Scottish Government Policy.
