Consumer Led Flexibility (CLF) is highly valuable to the UK economy and to consumers through lower energy bills and better services. The UK has a growing pool of innovators and improving conditions for realisation, but there is still a significant gap to bridge to reach a low cost, resilient, decarbonised energy system.
This report brings together the evidence, insights and tools developed through the GridFlex programme to understand what is holding back CLF and what is needed to help it scale.
The programme was delivered jointly by Digital Catapult and Energy Systems Catapult, funded by the UKRI R&D Missions Accelerator Programme. It adopted a systemic approach to the challenge of scaling CLF to the 10-12 GW that the energy system requires to achieve Clean Power 2030.
The programme combined strategic foresighting, policy and regulation review, engagement with a cohort of 17 deep tech innovators and two Lighthouse companies, investor engagement, systems mapping, and proof-of-concept tool development to create a consolidated evidence base.
