FloodAI

Protecting rural communities with AI flood warnings

  • Publicly sourced

The challenge

Six rural communities in Northumberland face flash flooding risks where water levels rise so quickly that conventional hydraulic models cannot provide adequate warning time for protective action. These communities have had no advance warning system to protect property or ensure safety during flood events.

The solution

FloodAI uses machine learning models trained on extensive flood-related datasets to predict flash floods in rapid-response catchments. The system combines real-time sensor data, weather forecasts, and historical flood records through transparent AI algorithms that provide explanations for predictions to build community trust.

The results

Currently in alpha testing phase with limited deployment across six rural Northumberland communities. Funding secured until 2027 for continued development under DEFRA's £200 million Flood and Coastal Innovation Programme.
