Museum of Classical Archaeology

The Museum of Classical Archaeology is home to one of the finest surviving collections of plaster casts of the antique in the world. The Museum was founded in 1884 to house the Fitzwilliam Museum's growing collection of plaster casts - and is today a thriving University of Cambridge Museum, embedded within the Faculty of Classics, one of the leading university Classics departments in the UK. MOCA houses more than 15,000 objects. Many of them are historical replicas, but we also a large sherd collection, a small collection of original artefacts, and an extensive squeeze collection, as well as several small archives. The Museum Director is an academic faculty member, and the Museum is staffed and run by a dedicated Curator.

As part of its mission statement, MOCA aims to enable, support and disseminate research into Classical Archaeology and its legacy at all levels. A key strategic priority is to improve accessibility to the collection and its associated information through the development of a new catalogue. MOCA is committed to providing free access to its collections for educational and research use, and welcomes research and education visits, collaborations and exhibition proposals.

As part of the University of Cambridge Museums, the Museum of Classical Archaeology is a recipient of National Portfolio Organisation funding from Arts Council England.
