STFC Boulby Underground Laboratory

Facility Overview The STFC Boulby Underground Laboratory is the UK's deep underground science laboratory located 1.1km below ground in Boulby mine - a working potash, polyhalite and salt mine on the North East coast of England. Boulby is one of just a few important facilities world-wide suitable for hosting ultra-low background and deep underground science projects. It is a special place for science, 'a quiet place in the Universe’, where studies can be carried out almost entirely free of interference from natural background radiation ever present on Earth’s surface. Boulby also provides access & support for studies of the geologically interesting deep underground environment. Science enabled at Boulby ranges from ultra-low background physics (neutrino and Dark Matter studies, ultra-low background material screening and gamma spectroscopy) to studies of geology/geophysics, climate, the environment, life in extreme environments, robotics and technology development for planetary exploration.
