What is Equality and diversity?

Equality is about treating everyone fairly and providing the same opportunities, and diversity acknowledges and appreciates the differences between people, like their race and religion. When combined, the sparks start to fly as they create an inclusive culture for staff to grow.

At Greater Anglia, we are committed to equality and diversity in the workplace as our policy means we welcome individuals from different backgrounds, and we strive to ensure that everyone is treated fairly, and is valued regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, marriage or civil partnership and pregnancy – and more!

Employee Network Groups

Affinity: LGBT+

Affinity, our LGBT+ colleague group, collectively works to ensure Greater Anglia is a safe place for everyone to be their true self and to educate and talk to people throughout our business and beyond about the importance of diversity and inclusion.

Affinity is not merely a group that celebrates diversity on specific awareness days - it is a year-round commitment to nurturing a culture of acceptance and celebration. We understand that true inclusivity needs to acknowledge and appreciate the contributions of all individuals, regardless of their sex or sexuality.

George Carey

George Carey (he/him) - Chair of Affinity

"I am proud to support an honest and genuine workplace where we all feel comfortable being our true selves. Here at Greater Anglia, we have a strong commitment to diversity and equality, and being able to contribute to that is truly fulfilling. It demonstrates support not only for myself, but also for others within the LGBTQIA+ community."

Martin Burr

Martin Burr (he/him) - Co-Chair of Affinity

"I am proudly the co-chair of the Affinity networking group and the Health and Safety representative for my depot. The Affinity group is a LGBT+ support group set up to help Greater Anglia staff and their family members with any questions, understanding or just want a chat as this can be hard to find especially if they are concerned about people’s reactions, I thoroughly enjoy this voluntary role, offering advice and guidance to colleagues and their family."

Ethnicity and culture

The network group supports colleagues, ensuring that they are treated equally and with respect. If any issues arise in the workplace, we are here to assist, offering guidance and pointing individuals in the right direction for reporting such matters. Our goal is to create an environment where everyone can thrive, regardless of their differences.

But our work doesn't stop there. We are committed to bringing our colleagues together, fostering connections and promoting education about our diverse backgrounds. We want to celebrate the different holidays we observe, the delicious foods we eat, the languages we speak and the day-to-day nuances that make us who we are. Through this group, we hope to bridge understanding, break down barriers and encourage conversations that may be challenging but are necessary for growth.

sophie thrower

Sophie Thrower (she/her) - Chair of Ethnicity and Culture

“Being part of the networking groups here at Greater Anglia has been a push in the right direction of how we, as people, should be behaving in an ideal world nowadays.

“Having different people from different walks of life, heritage, cultures, religion, sexuality and sex all coming together in a big melting pot. Understanding that we all are unique in our own ways and that is OK. The networking groups are here to celebrate us all, who we are, what we believe and allowing us all to be ourselves in the workplace as well as out in the big wide world.

“The network groups are here to educate, support and guide our colleagues into a more inclusive and respectful environment and workplace.”

Christopher Lewis

Christopher Lewis (he/him) - Vice Chair of Ethnicity and Culture

“I am Christopher Lewis, an experienced Revenue Protection Officer based in Colchester, with over 20 years of service. I was approached to become vice chair of the Ethnicity and Culture group and this opportunity holds personal significance.

In secondary school, as one of few black students, I faced bullying and racially derogatory behaviour that affected my academic performance and self-confidence. However, my first full-time job at 23 changed everything, allowing me to express myself and develop confidence. I am passionate about inspiring others to learn from challenges and pursue their dreams.”
