Working to identify and disrupt terrorist attacks in the UK and minimise attacks against our interests overseas
The UK's approach to Countering Terrorism (CT) is well-established and GCHQ has a long history of success, thanks to the dedication of our people and the application of our unique capabilities. However, the terrorist threat continues to evolve and is increasingly unpredictable.
In the UK, individuals will continue to hold complex and wide-ranging grievance narratives that can, at short notice, motivate to violence. Overseas, the threat from terrorist organisations has evolved; they increasingly operate across international borders, harnessing their collective strength to direct threat towards the UK and our allies. The internet will inevitably continue to be a vehicle through which explicit and dedicated terrorist media content can be shared and like-minded individuals can connect.
In response, GCHQ CT is becoming increasingly adaptive. We optimise our existing capabilities and develop innovative technical solutions to keep up with the changing threat environment. We collaborate ever more closely with partners to meet our operational and technological challenges. This includes (but is not limited to) MI5, MI6, Counter Terrorism Policing and Military colleagues. We work with a host of international partners to deny our adversaries operating space, be that in the real world or online.
Our intelligence also helps to inform Government policy and CT strategy. We work closely with the Cabinet Office, Home Office and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to shape the way that the Government responds to terrorism now and in the future.
We need staff with a broad range of skills and specialisms to keep the UK safe from terrorism, including analysts, linguists, data scientists and policy and compliance experts.
