Accessibility statement for https://borders.ukdataservice.ac.uk/
This accessibility statement applies to content published on https://borders.ukdataservice.ac.uk/.
This website is run by EDINA (as a partner in the UK Data Service). We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website.
For example, that means you should be able to:
Change colours, contrast levels and fonts using browser or device settings.
Zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen.
Navigate most of the website using a keyboard or speech recognition software.
Listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver).
We`ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.
AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.
How accessible this website is
We know some parts of this website aren`t fully accessible:
-
May not be fully compatible with screen readers – the initial focus works intermittently with JAWS, passive notifications using the notification service are not read out, text question or header is not read out when dialog is opened.
-
May not be fully compatible with other forms of assistive technology e.g. Read&Write or Zoomtext.
-
May not be able to access all content by using the keyboard alone and it is unclear where you have tabbed to.

Enforcement procedure
The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the ‘accessibility regulations’). If you`re not happy with how we respond to your complaint, contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS).
Technical information about this website’s accessibility
The UK Data Service is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
Compliance status
The website has been tested against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines - WCAG 2.2 AA standard.
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the ‘non-compliances and exemptions‘, listed below.
Non-accessible content
The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.
Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations
-
The contrast for survey buttons on some pages is too low. This fails WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.3 (Contrast (Minimum)). We will speak with the third-party responsible for the creation of the survey buttons and ask if they can improve the contrast used on the survey buttons.
-
The pages that have select boxes do not allow the user to cancel an action after it started. This fails WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 2.5.2 (Pointer Cancellation). We will speak with our developers to check that any new pages or applications that are created do meet this criterion.
-
The privacy statements on our site opens in a new tab, without warning. This fails WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 3.22 (On Input). We will speak with our developers to check that any new pages or applications that are created do meet this criterion.
-
Some of the buttons and other input elements on our web applications are either too small or too close together which could cause accessibility problems for people navigating the site using a tablet or other touchscreen device. This fails WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 2.5.8 (Target Size (Minimum)). Our developers will investigate increasing the size and spacing of such interactive elements on the site and ensure that any new interactive elements are of a minimum size and spaced appropriately.
Disproportionate burden
This section covers issues that we cannot fix right now. There is a help system in place that requires extensive fixing, to be adequately accessible, to meet WCAG 2.2 AA. The pages in the help system were rendered using a proprietary software system that we do not hold a license for currently. Therefore, currently we are unable to make changes to the help pages to make them more accessible. To rectify this, we plan to rewrite the help pages so that they are accessible using a system that does not rely on us holding a license to this proprietary software.
Content that`s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations
PDFs and other documents. The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they`re not essential to providing our services.
What we`re doing to improve accessibility
We plan to constantly review and where possible improve accessibility on this website. We will continue to strive to address these issues and deliver a solution or suitable workaround.
We will continue to monitor system accessibility and will carry out further accessibility testing as these identified accessibility issues are resolved.
