UK Data Service Postcode Data Selector

Using this UK Data Service Postcode Data Selector tool enables you to download subsets of postcode record data extracted from versions of the ONS Postcode Directory (ONSPD) released by ONS from May 2011 through to the latest version. Rather than downloading the millions of records that make up a complete UK wide ONSPD dataset, using this tool you can be more selective and choose to download only select sets of Postcode Areas; Postcode Districts or Postcode Sectors. You can also choose which standard fields from the ONSPD to include in your download rather than needing to download all ONSPD fields.

In addition, using the Assign a lookup to a geography held by UKDS capability, the Postcode Data Selector tool enables you to assign to postcode records, custom lookups to geographies held by the UK Data Service that are not included as standard by ONS in the ONSPD. This could include custom-lookups to 1991; 1981 and 1971 census geographies held by the UK Data Service.

If you want to download complete UK wide ONS Postcode Directory for a given quarter you can obtain these by going to the UKDS Postcode Directory Download application using the Postcode Directory button from the Quick Access menu at the upper left of this page.

Choose quarterly postcode directory version to download and limit selected postcodes by country:

 

Here you can select Postcode Area; Postcode District and Postcode Sector filters to limit the set of postcode records that will be downloaded from the chosen postcode directory. Clicking the Refine button drills down through the postal geography enabling you to narrow the filter to select a smaller set of postcodes. Clicking the Add button will place the filter into the 'Selected Postcode Geography' list.

Add filters to limit selected postcodes by Postcode Area; District or Sector:

Pick which ONS provided fields or lookups to custom geographies to include with each postcode record:

To the downloaded postcode records, add a lookup to a custom UK Data Service Geography. Selecting a Geography from the Available UKDS Geographies list and clicking the Add button will add to the output postcode records a new column providing the geographic identifier of the selected Geography(s).
