Tate Artist Copyright Service supports artists and estates by working on their behalf to handle the complicated legal administration of copyright in the entirety of an artist’s oeuvre. We negotiate licences for the reproduction of an artist's work (paintings, sculptures, prints etc), and charge users considered fees on the artist's or estates' behalf. A percentage of these copyright fees are returned to the artist or the estate on a regular basis. The remaining percentage goes to support the provision of the service with any profit being gifted to Tate to support its mission.
As Tate is a creator of our own copyright, a user of others' copyright and has a responsibility to respect and protect the rights of the artists we work with, copyright is at the centre of everything we do.
Tate Artist Copyright Service has successfully represented the estate of Sir Jacob Epstein for over 20 years, and more recently those of Naum Gabo, Nigel Henderson, Tom Picton and Michael Andrews. We also administer the copyright in the works of Cecil and Elizabeth Collins on behalf of Tate, as well as the copyright in specific artworks in Tate's collections where artists have graciously assigned the copyright in these works to Tate. This includes works by Victor Pasmore, Sylvia Sleigh, David Bomberg, Sir Stanley Spencer, Graham Sutherland, Ithell Colquhoun and Lucian Freud.

The digital age brought numerous new ways images could be produced and shared. It became impossibly difficult for us to manage ourselves. That was when we asked Tate Images to help. It was an enormous relief to find such understanding of both our needs and the complex business of reproduction rights and copyright. Tate Images took this on for us and we have had a wonderful and cooperative relationship ever since.
