Standard - The SMB facilitates the appointment by the Secretary of State for Justice of two Lay Advisers

5.1 Section 326(3) of the Criminal Justice Act 2003 (the Act) requires the Secretary of State to appoint two Lay Advisers to each Responsible Authority (RA). RAs may have more than two Lay Advisers at the Secretary of State's discretion. Recruitment campaigns are conducted by the RA. The Act requires RAs to monitor the effectiveness of MAPPA in consultation with their Lay Advisers and to make any necessary changes. Lay Advisers are full members of the Strategic Management Board (SMB). Lay Advisers are unpaid, voluntary public appointees who provide up to 8 hours a month to the SMB. Any additional time worked should be justified and agreed between the Lay Adviser and the SMB.
